If you believe as I do, and as our founding fathers did, that our congressmen and woemn were meant to be citizen legislators rather than career politicians take the time to sign the petition at the website below (you need not supply all of the personal contact information in order for your signature to be counted):

I don't believe that congressmen and senators were meant to be individuals who hold onto the job for 20, 30, sometimes 40 years. In that time they become detached from their local constituents and act for national lobbyists and interest groups rather than the citizens they were elected to represent. They forget where they came from and become corrupted by power and influence. A 2-term (12-year) limit for Senators would go a long way in blocking some of that. Term limits are a HUGE part of the answer to our problems. Please sign the petition.

ReplyDeleteI think this is important. I think the writers of the Constitution made a big mistake on this one. Term limits for the president but not Congress. I guess you can say they couldn't have known how big of a factor money would be in congressional elections in the late 20th/early 21st centuries but gee, I wish somehow they could have looked into the future. It's a huge problem when our elected leaders can go for so long not really living like the rest of us live yet they are the ones who are charged with writing the laws that effect our lives.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is not our system. It is the lax attitude that our popluation has adopted. they no longer care what is going on. They enjoy their naivete; driving around in expensive foreign cars and blasting their awful music while wearing designer clothing.
ReplyDeleteSo, the people are so distracted that they no longer watch what the elected officials do. They just don't care.
If we were responsible citizens then we would not need to have term limits.
Once again, this is just a symptom of how sick our society has become. ...broken record, and all that :)
Okay, I'll agree that a lax attitude in our population is part of the problem but only to a point. The system IS screwed up. Harry Reid, ( I throw up in my throat a little when I type his shameful name) is running for re-election (God-willing he'll get his butt kicked) and has collected 80% of his campaign money from out-of-state!! Think about that. He's a US senator but his job is to represent the will of the people of Nevada. Here's another problem with career politicians. How do you REALLY know what issues face your constituents in say, Ohio, when you've spent most of the year for 20 years in DC? Anyway, how is Reid the smelly, filthy, dirtbag) representing Nevadans when 80% of his campaign contributions come from people that he's not even elected to represent?! He gets to DC and has lots of promises to keep to all of those non-Nevadans who paid for his campaign. It's shameful and I would bet it happens all the time to both republicans and democraps. So, Ammon, I think the system has become soiled. Hmmm, it feels good to disagree with you.
ReplyDeleteChew on this - I think we need to consider repealing the 17th amendment. I bristled the first time I heard that but the more I think about it the more sense it makes. This idea deserves an entire blog post so I'll get to that in the next day or two.
We should also repeal the 10th amendment, if only to make our Bill of Rights align with what is actually going on in this country.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what foreign cars and designer clothes have to do with people's lack of interest. I know plenty of people driving US-made cars, and wearing Walmart clothes who don't know jack, and don't care.
ReplyDeleteAlso, a lot of foreign cars aren't expensive at all, like Honda or Toyota. Of course, German quality cars are expensive. :)
Anyway, I agree that there is a lack of care. I don't think foreign cars or clothes are a good indicator of determining who cares and who doesn't.
Fran, You are getting distracted by words. My point wasn't about what brand they own, but that the junk that they own is what they care about. Far too many people no longer pay attention to what is truly important in this world. They are enamored by technology, or whatever.
ReplyDeleteI know people who are addicted to surfing the internet (who literally spend the majority of their days online), or shopping or their car or everything. It is sickening.
Far too few truly submerge themselves in the Gospel. Far too few truly care about our government to actually do something about it. like signing a petition, or even VOTE! And even the people who do vote... many of them do not know anything more about the stance of the candidates than what they have seen on a smear campaign on TV. That is what I was talking about.
This world has become one of complacent idolatrous people. Riches have truly destroyed a once glorious nation. And those who are "poor" (richer than most people in the world) spend their lives lusting after what the middle-class and the rich have (obviously not all of them). Many (not all) criticize and complain and steep in their self-loathing about how they don't have as much as others rather than working for a better life.
So basically most of this country doesn't give a crap about what is going on in Washington. That is the problem. The system was based on a population who wanted to govern themselves. A population that was selfless. "WE THE PEOPLE"
Not WE THE POLITICIANS! Now the population is nothing but selfish and we all know what selfishness leads to. Destruction.
You're awesome Ammon. "The system was based on a population who wanted to govern themselves. A population that was selfless."
ReplyDeleteThat is one of the greatest things you've ever said. John Adams said almost that exact thing once. Go look it up. That's our problem. To truly get back to where we came from we have to govern OURSELVES again and not count on the government to do that for us. We have to get out of our obsession with Hollywood stars (I call it American Idol syndrome). We need to know more about our politicians than we do about Lindsey Lohan's court date or Britney Spears latest drunken rampage.
Ohhh! Wait, go back... Britney Spears had another drunken rampage? Where can I find the pics?
ReplyDeletePlease... please... please :)
Ammon you're getting distracted by words. I'm not sure if Britney actually had a drunken rampage. I was just trying to make the point that...oh forget it.
